About the Alabama State Flag

The first Alabama State Flag was designed on January 11, 1861. The design was made by several women in Montgomery. On one side of the flag it had the words "Noli Me Tangere" meaning "touch me not". It also had a picture of a coiled rattlesnake and a cotton plant. On the other side of the flag it had a picture of the “Goddess of Liberty" and had "Alabama" and” Independent Now and Forever" written on it. That flag did not stay flying long at all. On February 10, 1861 it was ruined in a bad storm. Then from the dates March 4, 1861 until April, 1865 one of the Confederate Flags flew over Alabama. Finally on February 16, 1895 the Legislature of Alabama gave permission to have the "crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white" as the official flag to represent Alabama.
