California State Flags

The California state flag has a lot of history attached to it. The current California flag features a bear and was adopted from the original Bear Flag which was raised in 1846 by Americans who were revolting against Mexican rule. The current flag was adopted into legislature in 1911.

The bear reflects the many Grizzly bears found in the state of California. The words "California Republic" are shown to represent the American pioneers that took over the land. The flag is still called the "Bear Flag." The flag is white and has a wide red strip at the bottom. The flag also features a red start and a Grizzly bear walking on grass. The red start represents sovereignty.
